2026 House midterms

Expectations swing to a Democratic House vote win of 14 to 16 points in the midterms

The 14-to-16-point range went from unlikely to likely in about a day; the reason is unclear, and this story will be updated.

The 14-to-16-point range has moved from a toss-up to likely, and traders' central estimate has risen to 14.6 points from 14.2.

Traders now expect Democrats to win the national House popular vote in the Nov. 3 midterms by about 14.6 points, with a range of 12.6 to 15.8 points. The likeliest single outcome is a Democratic margin of 14 to 16 points, which has moved from unlikely to likely since this story began. The central estimate was 13.2 points then and 14.2 points at the last update.

The move came in stages. The 14-to-16-point range stayed unlikely through Thursday morning and early afternoon. It rose through Thursday evening to a toss-up, slipped back overnight, then jumped early Friday to likely. That is a swing from unlikely to likely in about a day.

The neighboring range of a 12-to-14-point Democratic win has fallen the other way. It was likely when the story began and is now unlikely.

The reason for the shift is not clear. No count update or other development found so far explains why traders moved toward a larger margin, and the story will be updated if a cause emerges.

Democrats won control of the House in the midterms. Before the election, a polling average showed a Democratic lead of roughly nine points, according to Ballotpedia. On Nov. 4, The Atlantic reported that Democrats were expected to win the national House vote by about 13 points.

The early counts do not show a margin as large as the one traders now favor. Poliwave's unofficial tracker, updated early Friday, showed Democrats with 55.3% of counted House votes and Republicans with 43.2%, a margin of about 12.1 points. That figure is not the final total, and it does not by itself point to a margin of 14 to 16 points.

The outcome will be settled by the totals the Clerk of the House publishes. Only votes for voting representatives from the 50 states count, and a margin that falls exactly between two ranges goes to the higher one. If the Clerk has not published by June 30, 2027, another credible source may be used.

What comes next depends on the count. Further state tallies, certification and any recounts the Clerk's totals include can change the national margin.
