Anthropic's valuation
Traders trim Anthropic's valuation outlook, leaving $2 trillion by year-end a toss-up
Bets on Anthropic's valuation hitting $2 trillion before year-end dropped over a day, and the reason for the drop is not yet clear.
Traders cut their expectations for Anthropic's valuation on Friday. A $2 trillion valuation before the end of the year is now a toss-up, after looking likely a day earlier. The reason for the drop is not yet clear, and no specific, timely development has been found to explain the slide on Thursday and Friday.
Across the full range of valuation targets, traders now expect Anthropic to reach about $2.15 trillion by Dec. 31, down from about $2.25 trillion when this story began. Their range runs from $1.55 trillion to $3.55 trillion. The single likeliest landing spot is between $1.5 trillion and $1.75 trillion. A $1.5 trillion valuation looks all but certain, while $1.75 trillion is still likely but less so than before. Targets of $3 trillion are unlikely, and $4 trillion and $5 trillion are long shots.
The odds have swung sharply this month. For most of mid-October, a $2 trillion valuation was a toss-up. Bets jumped on Oct. 26, the day Anthropic publicly filed for an initial public offering, and kept rising to a peak on Wednesday. They slipped on Thursday and fell further on Friday morning.
On the IPO itself, traders see a listing coming in the next few weeks. They expect it around mid-November, with early December within the range. For the market value Anthropic would close at on its first day of trading, they expect about $1.9 trillion, within a range of $1.45 trillion to $2.35 trillion.
Anthropic announced a $65 billion funding round at a $965 billion valuation on May 28. On Oct. 15, Reuters reported that some investors were discussing an IPO valuation of around $1.5 trillion, down from earlier expectations of roughly $2 trillion, amid concerns about slowing revenue growth. Nothing provided links that report to Friday's move.
The filing proposes a Nasdaq listing under the symbol ANT but leaves the offering price and share count blank. It shows $16.29 billion in first-half revenue and an $80.75 billion net loss, which includes a $72.4 billion accounting charge tied to financing agreements.
Anthropic has not announced an exact IPO date or final offering terms. Investors will watch for an updated filing, pricing and any listing. Before a listing, the outcome is judged on the price reported by Nasdaq Private Market, which showed $85.37 a share as of Oct. 15. After a listing, an official listing price or regular-hours public market value can count.
