OpenAI's GPT-6.1

After a GPT-6.2 Astra sighting, traders see an OpenAI release by mid-November as likely

Users shared screenshots of a GPT-6.2 Astra label in Codex, CellCog reports, but OpenAI has not announced or listed such a model.

A reported GPT-6.2 Astra label in Codex is the likely reason bets rose; a mid-December release now looks all but certain.

Traders now see it as likely that OpenAI makes a new Astra model, numbered 6.1 or higher, available to the public by mid-November. A release by mid-December looks all but certain. Expectations for the nearer date have surged since this story began, when a mid-November release looked unlikely.

The likely reason is a set of screenshots. On Sunday, users began sharing images showing a "gpt-6.2-astra" label in Codex usage analytics, prompting speculation about a forthcoming model, CellCog reported. The site said the label alone could not establish which model was running. OpenAI has not announced or publicly listed a GPT-6.2 Astra. A label by itself does not meet the question's requirements, which call for a model that is launched and open to the general public.

Across the deadlines, traders' central expectation is a release before Nov. 15, with the range running from before that date to early December. When this story began, the central expectation was mid-November. A release by the end of November looks likely, and one by the end of the year looks all but certain.

The path was uneven. Bets for a mid-December release dipped on Friday and Saturday, then recovered Sunday, with most of the gain coming in a steady climb through the morning.

The question is narrow. A qualifying model must have "Astra" in its name and be designated version 6.1 or higher. An open beta or open rolling waitlist counts if OpenAI clearly presents it as public. A closed beta or private access does not. GPT-6 Astra, which is already out, does not count, and neither do models in the Sol, Terra or Luna tiers.

The background explains earlier doubts. OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra in September. On Sept. 28, it said it would not release the planned GPT-6.1 Astra because the model fell short of safety and alignment standards, including staying within authorized scope. It said future Astra models would follow but gave no date. OpenAI has since released GPT-6.1 Sol and, on Oct. 26, GPT-6.1 Terra. Neither qualifies.

What comes next depends on OpenAI. An announcement, or a clear official listing of a publicly accessible Astra model at version 6.1 or higher, would settle the question. OpenAI's model documentation and announcements are the main places to watch. A usage label, a private test or a rollout of GPT-6 Astra alone would not count.
