Trump names Miller chief of staff, and Wiles leaving before 2027 looks all but certain

Trump announced Stephen Miller will replace Wiles as chief of staff, and bets on her leaving jumped from unlikely to all but certain.

Traders now see White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles leaving the Trump administration before 2027 as all but certain, after President Trump announced Friday that Stephen Miller will replace her. Axios reported the announcement.

According to the report, Miller takes over as chief of staff on Nov. 9, and Wiles moves to Trump's political operation. The announcement does not spell out the details of her new role, so it is not fully clear whether she keeps any formal post in the administration. AP reports that she is leaving.

The shift was abrupt. Through Thursday and into early Friday, bets on Wiles leaving sat in the unlikely range, a step down from the toss-up level of earlier in the week. Later Friday they jumped to near-certainty within hours, a turnaround from doubt to expectation that came on the announcement itself. Before that, bets had moved up and down in a fairly narrow band for weeks. They spiked briefly on Wednesday, after Republicans lost control of Congress in the Nov. 3 midterms, then faded.

Wiles became Trump's chief of staff in January 2025. In October, reports that Trump was discussing possible replacements led him to deny he would fire her. On Oct. 16 he said there was no chance of her dismissal. After the midterms, the Daily Beast reported that some Republican officials and operatives wanted Wiles or Secretary of State Marco Rubio held responsible for the losses. That report cited no decision to remove either official. Friday's announcement settles the question about Wiles that had stayed open.

The move also changes the picture for others thought to be at risk. Traders still see Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth leaving before 2027 as close to a toss-up, while Rubio is seen as unlikely to go.

The question covers an announced resignation or removal by Dec. 31, which counts even if it takes effect later. An announcement that Wiles is leaving the administration is enough. What to watch is Miller's start on Nov. 9 and whether the White House clarifies what Wiles's new role is and whether it is a formal administration position.
