Trump impeachment

After Jeffries plays down impeachment, Trump being impeached before 2028 is a toss-up

Incoming majority leader Hakeem Jeffries said no House Democrat had raised impeaching Trump, MLive reports, though he has not ruled it out.

Traders now see a toss-up on whether the House impeaches President Donald Trump before 2028, a clear step down from the day before, when it looked likely. The likeliest single outcome across the timeline is that no impeachment vote passes by the end of 2027.

The likely reason is Jeffries' post-election message. On Wednesday, after Democrats won the House in the November 3 midterms, incoming majority leader Hakeem Jeffries stressed affordability and said no House Democrat had spoken to him about impeaching Trump, according to MLive and The New Republic. His remarks plausibly contributed to the decline, but he has not ruled impeachment out.

The odds moved sharply in a short time. They hovered around likely through Wednesday, then edged up overnight into early Thursday. They fell steeply by midday Thursday and stayed near a toss-up in the afternoon.

Other deadlines show where expectations sit. Traders still see impeachment by the end of 2026 as a long shot, and by the end of June 2027 as unlikely. For the full period, traders' central expectation is around early December 2027, with the range running from around early February 2027 to no impeachment by the end of 2027. The central expectation was around late June 2027 when this story began, so traders have pushed it back by roughly five months.

The question requires only that the House approve one or more articles of impeachment by simple majority. A Senate trial, conviction or removal is not needed.

Democrats' win gives them the ability to bring articles to a vote once the new Congress takes office. The current House tabled an impeachment resolution against Trump on September 15 by 232 votes to 147, with 47 voting present, according to the Congressional Record. Before the midterms, Reuters reported that Democrats were planning investigations rather than an immediate impeachment push. Former Vice President Kamala Harris also advised against impeachment in late October.

Jeffries' emphasis on affordability continues that caution, even as Democrats prepare investigations of Trump, his family and his administration. The White House denies wrongdoing.

Jeffries said he expects to meet House Democrats early next week to discuss their path forward. The new Congress takes office in January 2027, after which a Democratic House could investigate or vote on articles.
