Machado says she is back in Venezuela, hours after traders doubted it
EL PAÍS reported Sunday that Machado had returned after she posted "Estoy aquí, con ustedes"; expectations flipped from unlikely to certain within hours.

Bets on her entering by year-end have also settled at certain, though only EL PAÍS's report and her post support the return.
Opposition leader María Corina Machado said on Sunday that she is back in Venezuela, and the Spanish newspaper EL PAÍS reported that she had returned. Machado posted "Estoy aquí, con ustedes" ("I'm here with you"). Traders now treat her entering the country as certain, whether the question is this month or by year-end, though the return has not been formally settled.
The change was a turnaround within hours. Bets on her entering Venezuela by year-end stayed unlikely for most of the past two weeks. They jumped briefly on Friday, Oct. 23, then slipped back on Saturday and drifted lower early Sunday. Then, over about an hour on Sunday afternoon, they surged from unlikely to all but certain. They have since settled at certain.
The EL PAÍS report and Machado's post line up closely with the timing of the move and are the likely reason for it. The available material does not include confirmation from other outlets, and it does not describe how she crossed into Venezuela.
Machado left Venezuela in December 2025 to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and publicly vowed to return. Her attempts failed repeatedly. Reuters reported three unsuccessful efforts in September, and EL PAÍS later described at least seven over three months. Reuters also reported that U.S. officials had privately urged her to delay.
On Oct. 16 she said she would return "before you imagine" while criticizing her exclusion from U.S.-backed talks. The State Department said she had the right to return. Those talks between the government and the opposition ended a third round on Oct. 22 without concrete agreement on elections. On Oct. 23, opposition demonstrators demanded an election date and Machado's return.
What comes next is political. Reuters has reported that Venezuela has not set an election date. Machado has called for one by July 2027, and talks continue over electoral and judicial reforms. Whether her presence changes the pace of those negotiations is not known.
