Traders rule out International Court of Justice after Nobel announcement

The Norwegian Nobel Institute and South Carolina Public Radio, citing NPR, reported the committee’s choice but did not identify the laureate.

Bets on the International Court of Justice also collapsed after the announcement, with traders treating its win as decided against.

Bets on the International Court of Justice winning the Nobel Peace Prize have fallen from a long shot to near zero. The shift followed the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s announcement Friday, which coincided with the final collapse. Traders now treat an ICJ win as decided against, but the reports available from the Norwegian Nobel Institute and South Carolina Public Radio, citing NPR, do not name the laureate. That leaves the committee’s choice unconfirmed in public reporting, not proof that the ICJ lost.

The market had been steady at a very low level from late September through Thursday. On Friday, bets briefly rose before plunging. The committee’s announcement plausibly explains the final drop; it does not account for the earlier rise and retreat. Those earlier swings have no known explanation.

The day also brought dramatic reversals in bets on other possible laureates. Yulia Navalnaya briefly became a likely winner early Friday, then her chances collapsed after the announcement. Mykola Kuleba and Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms were also treated as out of contention. Those moves put the ICJ’s drop in the context of a broad reassessment after the committee’s choice, but they do not identify who won.

Public speculation had included candidate names, but the Peace Research Institute Oslo’s director’s list was not an official shortlist. The Norwegian Nobel Institute says 287 candidates were nominated and that current nominees remain confidential for 50 years. The committee’s announcement determines the prize; the Dec. 10 ceremony is not needed to establish the recipient. Until reliable reporting identifies the laureate, traders’ decision to rule out the ICJ should not be mistaken for confirmation of the winner.
