Venezuela's Machado

Machado entering Venezuela by year-end is a toss-up, with this month still unlikely

Bets on Machado entering Venezuela this month jumped Friday afternoon but remain unlikely, and the reason is not yet clear.

Traders sharply raised their bets on Friday that opposition leader María Corina Machado will physically enter Venezuela this month, though that outcome still looks unlikely. Entering the country by the end of the year is now a toss-up, in a related contract that has climbed from unlikely since this story began. Only a crossing onto Venezuelan land counts. Entering the country's airspace or waters does not.

The jump this month came late in the day. Through Thursday and most of Friday, expectations for an entry this month had sunk to a long shot. After being unlikely at the start of the month, they slid through mid-October, sagging further on October 19 and 20. They ticked up briefly on October 21, then fell back the next day. They moved to unlikely only in the final hours of Friday, in one of the sharpest single-day jumps of the month. Bets on a return by year-end rose earlier the same afternoon.

The reason is not yet clear. Recent reporting shows no development close to the jump that would explain it, and none of the earlier events can be tied to it by timing alone. Reuters reported Friday that Machado still had not announced a date for her return.

The backdrop is a difficult path home. Reuters reported on September 16 that Machado was weighing when to return amid reluctance from the Trump administration. On September 22 and 23 she made several unsuccessful attempts to get back to Venezuela. Her opposition coalition reaffirmed her as its leader on October 18 while she remained abroad. On Thursday, opposition supporters held a nationwide protest demanding her safe return and a timetable for elections. The same day, the third round of talks between the government and the opposition ended without an announced election date.

What comes next is mostly organizing rather than travel. Reuters reported that her party, Vente Venezuela, planned to launch a voter-registration app on Saturday. That is not evidence that Machado is on her way home. The next round of government-opposition talks is set for November 11 to 15. Machado has called for an election by July 2027. A confirmed travel plan, a change in permission or obstruction affecting her entry, or credible reporting that she has crossed into Venezuelan territory would bear most directly on whether the outcome becomes more likely.
