Brazil tally has traders treating Flávio's first-round lead as settled
Reuters cautioned that early returns came faster from some Flávio-leaning states than from areas favoring Lula.

After another tally kept Flávio ahead, traders moved from near certainty to treating his first-round lead as settled.
A TSE-based count kept Flávio Bolsonaro ahead of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil’s first-round vote. As returns advanced Sunday, Antena 1, citing Reuters, reported Flávio leading 50.96% to 40.78% with 10.08% of polling sections counted. Reuters cautioned that some states where Flávio was ahead were further along in reporting than states where Lula was leading. Later tallies continued to show Flávio in front, including an EL PAÍS report of 47.3% to 44.8% with about 98% counted.
That count appears to have reinforced traders’ view: by Sunday evening, they treated Flávio’s first-round lead as settled, after already seeing it as all but certain. Earlier coverage cited a TSE-based tally with 99.09% counted and Flávio still ahead. Other bets moved in the same direction: traders became much less confident Lula would qualify for the runoff, while expectations that Flávio would finish second fell sharply as traders came to expect him to lead. Bets that Flávio would win the first round by less than five percentage points also strengthened.
Expectations swung sharply around election day. Flávio’s chances weakened early Sunday after final polls had put Lula narrowly ahead or within reach: Quaest, published October 3, showed Lula at 46% and Flávio at 45%, within its margin of error. As the first returns came in, traders briefly split on who would lead. The count then showed Flávio ahead, and expectations turned rapidly in his favor as that lead persisted. On October 3, traders had still favored Lula to lead the first-round vote.
The first-round question is about who receives the most valid votes, not who becomes president. Neither candidate had more than half of the vote in the tallies cited, so the October 25 runoff will decide the presidency but cannot change the first-round ranking. The TSE’s official results portal remains the source for final totals. Until those confirm the ranking, traders’ settled view is a judgment based on preliminary returns, not an official final result.
