Brazil's first-round count puts Lula second, a result traders treat as settled

The final surge has no distinct new catalyst; Agência Brasil's tally already showed Lula in second with 99.99% of ballots counted.

Bets climbed from likely to all but certain, and traders now treat Lula’s second-place finish as settled.

Bets on Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva finishing second in Brazil’s first-round vote climbed sharply since the last update, moving from likely to all but certain. Traders now treat the result as settled, though the market has not officially resolved. No distinct new catalyst for this final surge is established. Agência Brasil had already reported a near-complete tally showing Lula in second.

The odds had been unlikely on October 1 and 2, then rose on October 3 as polls and early voting news shifted expectations. On October 4, they fluctuated before jumping Sunday evening as the count advanced. Earlier, Reuters, syndicated by Devdiscourse, reported that partial returns put Flávio Bolsonaro well ahead of Lula, while cautioning that areas favoring Flávio were further along in the count. As more sections were tallied, that early lead narrowed but held.

Before voting, a Quaest poll put Lula at 46% of valid first-round votes and Flávio at 45%, within the poll’s two-point margin of error. The near-final tally reported by Agência Brasil had Flávio first with 47.03% and 56,103,033 votes, and Lula second with 45.16% and 53,870,724 votes, with 99.99% of ballots totaled. That confirms the ranking earlier coverage described while the count was incomplete. Bets on Flávio leading the first round also strengthened as the count came in.

The question concerns who received the second-most valid votes in the first round, not who will become president. Lula and Flávio are scheduled to face each other in the October 25 runoff, which will decide the presidency but cannot change the first-round ranking. The reported tally leaves little room for a change in Lula’s placement unless it is significantly corrected.
