After the TSE confirmed the runoff, traders now treat an outright first-round win as settled against.

Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court announced a runoff between Flávio Bolsonaro and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after the October 4 first round. Traders now treat an outright first-round win as settled against, after a further modest decline left that outcome a very remote chance. As the count advanced, EL PAÍS and InfoMoney/Reuters reported Flávio’s early lead above 50% was vulnerable because areas where he was strongest were being counted faster. The latest reports from UOL/Reuters put Flávio at 47.33% and Lula at 44.81%, with 98.2% counted.

Expectations were steady on October 2 and 3, when a first-round win looked like a long shot. On October 4, early returns briefly lifted hopes: Flávio’s share was above the more than 50% of valid votes needed to win outright. As more Lula-leaning areas reported, the prospect faded. Reuters reported Flávio at 50.41% with 41.57% of sections counted; a TSE-sourced tracker later put him at 49.58% with 64.81% counted. The odds rose sharply during the early returns, then fell as the count weakened his lead. The latest small drop extends that reversal.

Earlier coverage tracked the narrowing lead and growing expectations of a runoff. The TSE’s announcement confirms that scenario; it does not change what the market asks, which is whether anyone won outright in the first round. Bets that Lula would qualify for the runoff also hardened into near certainty as the count advanced.

The October 25 runoff will decide the presidency, but cannot alter whether a candidate won outright on October 4. The first-round question is therefore treated by traders as settled against, though the market has not officially resolved it.
