The UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that an outbound tanker caught fire after being struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz. The crew was reported safe, and authorities were investigating. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard separately claimed the previous night that a supertanker had struck a mine. Neither report establishes that the United States and Iran have accepted the same official agreement on Hormuz shipping, which is what traders are weighing. A shared deal by the end of November still looks unlikely, though it is not beyond reach.
Expectations for an agreement fell from a higher level earlier in the week. They climbed sharply on October 8 after Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran would send its response to U.S. proposals through mediators and described progress with Oman on safe shipping routes. Anadolu Agency and Oman’s foreign ministry reported those developments. The rise faded, and expectations jumped again early October 9 before dropping sharply later that day. That decline had no verified trigger in the reporting; the tanker incidents came afterward and should not be treated as its cause.
The latest reports add to the shipping-security tensions, but they do not change the diplomatic requirement. An August joint statement by Iran and Oman described a proposed temporary corridor and continuing technical talks—not U.S. acceptance of a shared agreement. The Associated Press reported on October 10 that negotiations appeared stalled amid disputes over the U.S. blockade and attacks on tankers. Iranian officials have said the blockade must end before Iran stops attacks on international tankers, while President Donald Trump has said the blockade will remain in place.
A Hormuz agreement by the end of October is a long shot, while one by year-end also looks unlikely. No negotiation milestone or announcement has a confirmed date. Renewed mediated talks or formal acceptance by both governments could change expectations; continued disputes over the blockade and tanker attacks could make agreement harder. Separate route coordination or statements of support would not, by themselves, amount to the shared agreement traders are considering.
