Israel–Iran ceasefire

Traders certain the Israel-Iran ceasefire continues through November 2

A truce through November 30 is a toss-up, and the reason for traders' growing confidence is not clear.

The focus moves to a ceasefire lasting through November 2, which traders now treat as certain; later dates, including November 30, remain far less secure.

Traders now treat it as certain that the Israel-Iran ceasefire continues through November 2, though the period has not ended and the question has not resolved. The latest move was only a nudge higher, from expectations that were already all but certain.

The path here was uneven. Confidence dropped sharply on October 29, when a ceasefire holding through the period looked far less secure for a time. It recovered on October 30, rose again on October 31 and has crept higher through Sunday. The reason for the swings is not clear. Reporting from the period does not establish what drove the drop, the rebound or the latest gain, and the story will be updated if a cause emerges.

The backdrop remains tense. On October 21, Axios reported that dozens of Israeli fighter jets had flown as far as Iran's border two days earlier in what officials saw as a show of force, not a strike on Iranian territory. On October 30, Le Monde reported that U.S. officials had warned regional governments to prepare for possible strikes on Iran after the U.S. midterm elections on November 3, though President Donald Trump had not made a final decision. On October 31, AP reported that Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei called for an immediate response to threats, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described a new proposal with mediators to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. None of those statements is itself a qualifying strike.

Beyond Monday, traders are less sure. A ceasefire lasting through November 7 or November 15 is likely, but one lasting through November 30 is a toss-up, and one lasting through December 31 is unlikely. Across those dates, traders' central expectation is a truce lasting to early December. A U.S.-Iran ceasefire through November 2 is also all but certain, while a U.S.-Iran Hormuz agreement and an announcement ending the U.S. blockade of Iran are both long shots.

The question stays open until the end of the day Monday in Iran. Only an Israeli or Iranian air strike or surface-to-surface missile strike that directly hits the other country's land or internal waters would end the ceasefire. Threats, intercepted missiles, debris and maritime impacts would not. The U.S. midterm elections on November 3 fall just after this window closes.
