The Associated Press reports Trump warned Iran he was ready to “finish it off,” but describes no executed strike.
The Associated Press reported Saturday that President Donald Trump warned he was ready to “finish it off” if Iran did not capitulate. It was a threat, not a reported strike. Traders still favor the U.S.-Iran ceasefire continuing through October, though expectations have eased from their stronger level earlier in the week. The reason for that pullback is not clear.
Bets strengthened from near even at the end of September to a firmer likelihood by Oct. 4. They then weakened after The Atlantic reported on Oct. 7 that the White House had asked the Pentagon to develop options for strikes on Iranian targets. Trump said the next day that the United States would not resume strikes before the midterm elections, and expectations of the ceasefire continuing rose sharply. The subsequent retreat gave back part of that gain; available reporting does not establish what prompted it.
The question is whether the United States initiates an air or surface-to-surface missile strike that directly hits Iran’s land territory or internal waters by Oct. 31. A threat, a plan, an attack on Yemen, or U.S. action at sea would not by itself count. The AP report also said Trump and Iranian leaders viewed the election calendar as unrelated to their decisions about the war. Earlier AP coverage said Tehran wants the United States to lift its blockade and provide sanctions relief as part of any deal.
Traders are far more confident the ceasefire lasts through Oct. 12 and Oct. 15, while expectations are close to even for it continuing through November. The Associated Press reported that U.S. forces could arrive in the region as early as the end of October. Further military preparations, diplomacy or an actual qualifying strike could change expectations; the reporting identifies no U.S.-Iran decision or meeting scheduled before the October cutoff.
