US–Iran conflict

With two weeks left this month, traders see a senior U.S.-Iran meeting as a long shot

Qatar says mediation continues, but Axios reports mediators are still awaiting Iran’s response to a U.S. counterproposal.

With two weeks left this month, traders still see a senior U.S.-Iran diplomatic meeting as a very long shot. Expectations have barely moved since the last update. No qualifying meeting is publicly scheduled, and the latest reporting says mediators are waiting for Iran to respond to a U.S. counterproposal, according to Axios. A response followed by agreement on terms and a meeting attended by senior representatives from both countries could change the outlook; continued silence, incompatible demands or renewed fighting could make a meeting less likely.

The prospect briefly improved in early October, then fell steadily. It edged up on October 6, when Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said mediation was continuing and messages were being exchanged. The odds fluctuated the next day before declining through the following week and dropping further on October 14 and 15. By October 16, the meeting had become a very long shot, and expectations have stayed near that level. The reporting does not establish a specific cause for those changes.

The last confirmed senior-level contact was an indirect meeting in New York on September 22, during the U.N. General Assembly. U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi took part through mediators. Iran later proposed a seven-day sequence to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and begin talks; President Donald Trump rejected that proposal publicly on September 26. Qatari-mediated efforts later that month made little progress, with the sides far apart over the U.S. naval blockade and Iranian nuclear concessions.

More recent public signals have been mixed. On October 11, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council head Mohsen Rezaei called the U.S. response insufficient and said Tehran was no longer responding. The next day, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said messages through mediators continued and proposals were under review. On October 13, Axios reported that Qatar’s mediators were still awaiting Iran’s response. Bets on a senior-level meeting in November and by year-end are also unlikely, though less distant deadlines leave more time for diplomacy.
