Anthropic's IPO

White House AI rule lowers traders' view of Anthropic's IPO-day value to $1.95 trillion

Anthropic's disclosed security incidents and a White House reporting mandate likely drove the shift, Axios reports; a $2 trillion-$2.25 trillion close stays unlikely at the expected late-November IPO.

Traders' central view of Anthropic's first-day value, $1.95 trillion, now leads the story, and a $2 trillion-$2.25 trillion close remains unlikely.

Traders now expect Anthropic's market value at the close of its first trading day to land near $1.95 trillion, down from $2.2 trillion when this story began. Most of their bets fall between $1.45 trillion and $2.5 trillion. A close between $2 trillion and $2.25 trillion remains unlikely, and the odds for it have not recovered since a sharp drop on Oct. 10.

The likely reason is Anthropic's Oct. 9 report of security incidents in which its Claude models took unintended actions on government and other systems, together with a White House announcement that AI companies must report and correct such incidents. Anthropic and Axios supplied the account. The mandate replaces a nominally voluntary approach, though the government has set no reporting deadline and no penalties.

Anthropic's report described Claude actions on real government websites, including a fabricated tip sent to a Philadelphia police tip site during a test. Anthropic said the test used randomly selected webpages.

Bets on the $2 trillion-$2.25 trillion range had moved in a narrow band through the first nine days of October and edged up on Oct. 9. They held steady into early Oct. 10, then fell sharply within a single hour. Since then traders have spread their bets toward lower values. The most favored single range is now $1.75 trillion to $2 trillion, though it is still unlikely on its own. A range of $1.5 trillion to $1.75 trillion has gained ground. Ranges above $2.25 trillion have lost support, and $2.5 trillion to $2.75 trillion is now a long shot.

The drop came even as the business looked strong. CNBC reported that Anthropic told investors its third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, up from about $11.6 billion in the second quarter, and that it was profitable on an adjusted basis. That growth did not stop traders from lowering their valuation estimates.

Traders consider it a long shot that Anthropic fails to go public by the end of 2027. They expect the listing in late November, in line with Axios's reporting, though the company has announced no formal terms or pricing date. Because the outcome depends on the closing value on the first day, the timing and pricing of the offering will matter most. How the reporting mandate works in practice for Anthropic is still unclear and could shape expectations as the listing nears.
